UK-Specific Document Requirements
🇬🇧 Important for British Citizens
UK documents require legalisation from the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), NOT apostille. The process is different from most countries.
1. ACRO Police Certificate
For emigration purposes, UK citizens request an ACRO Police Certificate (the standard document for overseas visa applications):
- • Apply online at acro.police.uk
- • Standard service: ~10 working days · premium available
- • Valid for 180 days (Ecuador requires <6 months old at submission)
- • Must be legalised by FCDO after you receive it
- • Cost: ~£55 (standard) · ~£90 (premium)
DBS checks (Basic/Standard/Enhanced) are for UK employment use; they're not the right document for overseas visa applications — request ACRO instead.
2. FCDO Legalisation Process
UK documents must be legalised (similar to apostille):
- • Apply online at gov.uk/get-document-legalised
- • Send original documents to FCDO Legalisation Office
- • Standard service: 3-4 weeks (£30 per document)
- • Premium service: 1 week (£75 per document)
- • Same-day service available in person (£100 per document)
3. Proof of Income
Documents showing £1,070/month income (approx $1,446):
- • UK bank statements (3-6 months showing regular income)
- • Employment contract/letter if working remotely
- • UK state pension statements for retirees
- • Private pension documentation
- • Bank statements don't need FCDO legalisation
