What you and your sponsor need to prepare

Confirm the organization’s legal status before ordering personal documents. The formal category is religioso o voluntario religioso; a church invitation alone does not establish eligibility.

Recognized religious organization

The organization must have legal personality recognized in Ecuador. Gather certified statutes and the appointment of its legal representative.

Sponsor request and activity

The legal representative requests the visa and explains the religious or religious-volunteer activities you will perform. Confirm your role, dates and support arrangements.

Sworn service declaration

The official procedure requires a sworn declaration of unpaid service and no other employment or self-employment in Ecuador. Discuss any paid role or remote work before choosing this category.

Identity and background records

Prepare a passport with at least six months of validity, a current photograph and the criminal-record certificates required for your country and residence history. Foreign records may need apostille or legalization and Spanish translation.

Means of livelihood

Document lawful financial support in the form required by the current procedure. Agree who supplies the organization's documents and who supplies your personal records.

Complete the current application and confirm the filing channel. If applying in Ecuador, review your existing status and expiry date before filing.

Choose the category that matches the activity

General nonprofit volunteering has a separate Volunteer Visa procedure. Some Catholic assignments fall under the Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference agreement. Review the organization’s registration, your role and compensation before deciding.

If your long-term plan includes permanent residence after 21 months, review continuity, travel history and the conditions of the status granted. That is a separate application.

What is the Ministry Visa in Ecuador?

Ministry Visa is a common English description of the temporary residence category for religious workers or religious volunteers of an organization legally recognized in Ecuador. It is not a visa for employment in a government ministry.

How long is the religious visa valid?

The official procedure lists two years. Continued sponsorship, renewal, travel conditions and any later permanent-residence application require a separate review under the current rules.

Is this the same as a volunteer or missionary visa?

The categories overlap in everyday language but have different official procedures. Religious activity with a recognized religious organization should be assessed under the religious route; general volunteering or missionary activity may fit another procedure. The Ecuadorian Episcopal Conference agreement also has a separate category.

Can I take a paid job on the religious visa?

Do not assume this route permits paid work. The published procedure requires a declaration of unpaid service and no other dependent or independent work. Review a paid role, remote work or a second activity before applying.

What does the Ministry / Religious Visa cost?

The official procedure lists a US$50 application fee and a US$200 issuance fee before any applicable discount or exemption. Confirm the current payment amount with the authority. EcuaPass support, translations, apostilles and other third-party costs are quoted separately.
