Decision Framework

Which Visa Should You Choose?

πŸ’Ό

You're a remote worker with a degree

The Professional Visa is your best bet. At just $482/month, it has the lowest income requirement of any Ecuador visa. The catch: your degree must be apostilled and registered with SENESCYT, which adds 2–4 weeks. If you have a bachelor's degree or higher from any accredited university, this is the most affordable path.

You work remotely but don't have a degree

The Digital Nomad Visa (Visa Nomada) has the same $482/month threshold without requiring SENESCYT degree validation. You'll need to show a contract or agreement with a foreign employer or client instead. If you're freelancing for international clients or employed by a company outside Ecuador, this is your path.

You receive Social Security or a pension

The Retirement Visa is the simplest of all five options. One pension verification letter plus bank statements showing $1,446/month in deposits. No degree, no SENESCYT, no investment. If your income comes from Social Security, a government pension, or military retirement, this is the cleanest path with the least paperwork.

Your income comes from investments or rentals

The Rentista Visa is designed for passive income that isn't a pension β€” rental properties, dividends, annuities, trust distributions, or systematic retirement account withdrawals. Same $1,446/month threshold as the Retirement Visa, but more complex documentation since you'll need to prove each income source separately.

You want to buy property or skip monthly proof

The Investor Visa requires a one-time $48,200 investment β€” either in Ecuadorian real estate or a bank CD. The major advantage: no monthly income proof at renewal. Your investment stays yours (it's not a fee), and after 21 months you can apply for permanent residency. If you were planning to buy property anyway, this visa pays for itself.

Important Details

What Every Applicant Should Know

01

All visas lead to permanent residency

After 21 months of continuous temporary residency with any visa type, you can apply for permanent residency. Once permanent, there are no income requirements and no renewals needed.

02

Government fees are the same across visa types

Every visa costs $320 in government fees ($50 application + $270 visa grant). Applicants 65 and older receive a 50% discount, reducing total government fees to $160.

03

Income thresholds are tied to Ecuador's SBU

The SBU (salario basico unificado) for 2026 is $482. Professional and Digital Nomad visas require 1Γ— SBU ($482/mo), while Retirement and Rentista require 3Γ— SBU ($1,446/mo). The Investor threshold is 100Γ— SBU ($48,200).

04

Dependents require separate applications

Spouses and children can join through dependent visa applications. Each dependent adds additional government fees and documentation but doesn't change the primary applicant's income requirement.

Legal basis: Ley Organica de Movilidad Humana Art. 60 Β· Acuerdo Ministerial No. 70 Β· 2026 SBU: $482
