The short answer is: an online label alone does not decide the question. Ecuador's SENESCYT recognition process evaluates the foreign qualification, the institution, the level and comparability of the credential, and—where relevant—the program's field and study modality.
That means a Western Governors University degree, or any other online degree, should not be treated as automatically valid or automatically rejected for a Professional Visa. The individual credential and current rules control.
What SENESCYT says to evaluate
SENESCYT's current general foreign-degree guidance identifies core evidence such as:
- an original apostilled degree or legally recognized equivalent;
- an academic record showing the duration of study;
- the field, branch, or knowledge area of the program; and
- modality information when the program falls within a field covered by the applicable higher-education resolution.
The guidance also says that foreign institutions should have accreditation or an equivalent status in the country where the degree was issued and that the credential should be comparable to a level recognized in Ecuador. Recognition is an agency determination, not a marketing claim from a school, consultant, or visa service.
Why online and distance delivery need more detail
“Online degree” is often too broad to be useful. Collect the university's official statements about:
- the exact credential and major;
- the institution that awarded it;
- the dates or duration of study;
- the delivery modality;
- the field or program classification; and
- the institution's accreditation or authorization in its home jurisdiction.
For some regulated or restricted fields, modality can matter. SENESCYT points applicants to the applicable list of programs and asks for modality information where the resolution requires it. Do not assume a business, technology, health, or other field is treated the same way as every other field.
What about WGU specifically?
The useful question is not simply “Does SENESCYT accept WGU?” It is “Can I document this exact WGU credential, its level, field, institution status, and modality in the form the current recognition process requires?” The answer can depend on the degree, the supporting records, the agency's verification, and any current restriction.
Prepare the final diploma, official academic record, program or field information, modality letter, and contact information for the institution. If a record is only available electronically, confirm whether it carries a verifiable signature, code, or other authenticity feature accepted by the current process. Keep apostille and translation questions separate from the recognition decision.
Recognition is not the whole visa file
Even if SENESCYT recognizes the degree, the Professional Visa application may still require identity, background, financial, and other category evidence. The degree also does not prove that every professional activity is authorized in Ecuador. Work rights and regulated occupations are separate questions.
