What This Visa Is
Ecuador's Volunteer Visa allows foreign nationals to live and volunteer with officially registered Ecuadorian NGOs, foundations, and nonprofit organizations. The visa is valid for up to 2 years, requires sponsorship from a registered organization, and is designed for extended volunteer commitments — typically six months or longer.
Short-term volunteering under 90 days can generally be done on a tourist visa without a separate volunteer visa. The Volunteer Visa is for those making a sustained commitment to a specific organization and project.
What You Need to Qualify
Organization Sponsorship
Your sponsoring organization must be officially registered with the Ecuadorian government as an NGO, foundation, or nonprofit. They provide the critical documents: an official invitation letter, a detailed volunteer work plan describing your role and project, proof of their legal registration and nonprofit status, and a volunteer agreement specifying the commitment length (minimum 6 months). Verify your organization's registration status before committing — an unregistered organization cannot sponsor a visa.
Personal Documents
Valid passport with at least 6 months remaining, apostilled criminal background check from your country of origin (valid 180 days), apostilled birth certificate, health certificate (can be obtained in Ecuador), and passport photos (5×5cm, white background).
Financial Proof
If your sponsoring organization provides housing, meals, and a living stipend, documentation of that support from the organization is your financial proof. If you are self-funded, you'll need bank statements demonstrating sufficient means to support yourself for the duration of your commitment. Government fees total $320 ($50 application + $270 visa grant). Dependents require $250/month extra income each.
Duration & What Comes Next
The Volunteer Visa is typically granted for one year, matching your volunteer commitment, and can be renewed for up to two years total with continued sponsorship from your organization.
After your volunteer commitment ends, you would need to convert to a different visa category or depart Ecuador. Common transitions include the Professional Visa (requires a SENESCYT-registered degree and $482/month income), Rentista Visa ($1,446/month), or Investor Visa ($48,200 one-time investment).
Key Considerations
This is an unpaid visa. Your organization can provide stipends for housing, meals, and basic living expenses, but paid employment is not permitted. If you need income, consider the Professional or Work Visa instead.
Your visa is tied to your sponsoring organization. If you want to switch to a different NGO, you'll need a new invitation letter and immigration approval for the change. If your project ends early or your relationship with the organization changes, notify immigration — your visa status depends on that sponsorship.
Before committing to a volunteer placement, verify that the organization is officially registered with the Ecuadorian government. An unregistered organization cannot sponsor your visa, regardless of how legitimate their work may be.
