Start with how you intend to use residency
If you want to visit family in Ecuador while continuing to live or work abroad, explain that travel pattern before choosing a visa route. A plan built around a permanent move may not answer the questions that matter to you.
Separate two decisions: whether your circumstances support a residency category, and whether that category's ongoing conditions fit your travel plans. Do not treat the word “permanent” as confirmation that there will be no future conditions, administrative tasks, or absence-related questions.
Put your intended travel pattern on one page
Before requesting advice, write down:
- Where you currently live and work.
- How often you hope to enter Ecuador and how long each visit might last.
- Your expected time outside Ecuador, including any long uninterrupted absence.
- Whether you plan to stay in Ecuador during application preparation or processing.
- Which family relationship you want considered and where that family member lives.
- Any residency or visa you already hold, with its category and grant date.
Approximate dates are useful if clearly marked as estimates. The point is to make the intended pattern visible before buying documents or committing to a filing strategy.
Ask about eligibility and ongoing conditions separately
The Foreign Ministry's permanent-residency category directory lists several possible bases for residency. It is not an individualized answer about how much time a particular holder may spend abroad.
Ask the person reviewing your case to identify the current rule for your exact category and circumstances, including any conditions or exceptions relevant to absences. Request the official source and an explanation of how dates would be counted. Do not substitute a remembered “six months” or “90 days” rule from a different category or an older forum discussion.

Make the family connection concrete
A spouse, parent, or child connection needs to be described accurately and supported by the relevant records. Explain nationality or immigration status, relationship, registration history, and where the family member lives.
