Chip Moreno

Founder & Lead Visa Consultant

I didn't just study Ecuador's visa system — I went through it myself. As an American who moved to Cuenca and obtained permanent residency through the Professional Visa pathway, I've navigated every step personally: SENESCYT, apostilles, immigration appointments, cédula.

I also run CuencaExpat.com and ExpatEcuador.com — the largest English-language Ecuador expat communities online, with 8,500+ combined members.

I founded EcuaPass because too many expats struggle with a process that just needs someone who knows the system inside and out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about getting your Ecuador visa

Four to six months total, from ordering your first document to receiving your cédula. The biggest variable is document gathering — your FBI check and apostilles take 8–14 weeks depending on whether you expedite. Government processing runs 4–8 weeks after submission.
Every visa requires a passport, apostilled criminal background check, apostilled birth certificate, health certificate, and passport photos. Additional documents vary by visa type — income verification for Pensioner/Rentista, degree registration for Professional, investment proof for Investor. We provide a personalized checklist during your consultation.
Not for the visa process — we handle all Spanish-language communication with immigration authorities. For daily life in Ecuador, basic Spanish makes everything easier, but it’s not a visa requirement.
Visa denials are almost always caused by document problems — an expired background check, a missing apostille, income documentation that doesn’t clearly show the required threshold. These are fixable. Our document review process is specifically designed to catch these issues before submission. If an application we prepared is denied due to something we missed, we work with you to resolve it at no additional service fee.
Yes. Most of our clients are already in Ecuador on tourist visas when they begin the residency process. You can start gathering documents before you arrive and submit your application after you’re here.
Government visa fees total $320 ($50 application + $270 visa grant) regardless of visa type. For dependents, the sponsor must prove an extra $250/month in income per dependent. EcuaPass service fees range from $1,200 to $1,750 depending on your visa category. Document costs (FBI check, apostilles, translations) are paid directly to those providers and vary by country of origin.
