Can I drive in Ecuador with my foreign licence?

Tourists can drive with a valid foreign licence for up to 30 days. After that, or if you become a resident, you need an Ecuadorian driver's licence. The process involves a written test (in Spanish), a practical driving test, and a medical exam. Some countries have reciprocal agreements that simplify the exchange. If your country does not, you will need to take the full Ecuadorian driving test. Many expats in Cuenca and Quito do not drive at all — taxis are cheap ($2–4 per ride) and buses cover most areas for $0.25–0.30.
