Steps to request and apostille your record

  1. STEP 1Request Your Background Check

    • Indiana state background checks are processed by the Indiana State Police (ISP) through their Criminal History Services division.
    • For immigration purposes, you have two main options:
    • Option 1 — Limited Criminal History Check (name-based): Submit a request online or by mail through the ISP. The fee is $15 per report. This provides conviction information from Indiana records.
    • Option 2 — Fingerprint-Based Check (recommended for immigration): Indiana has contracted with IDEMIA/IdentoGO to provide electronic fingerprint processing. Visit an IdentoGO enrollment center, where an agent will verify your photo ID, capture your digital fingerprints, and submit them to ISP in real time. The fee is $21.95, payable online or at the location.
    • Find your nearest IdentoGO location at in.state.identogo.com. Bring a current, valid government-issued photo ID.
  2. STEP 2Receive Your Results

    • For name-based (Limited Criminal History) checks, processing takes approximately 5-7 business days by mail.
    • For fingerprint-based checks through IdentoGO, results are typically available within 3-5 business days.
    • Results are mailed to the address provided on your application.
    • For immigration purposes, you may request a written disclosure from the Indiana State Police Record Division specifying that the check is for immigration use. Include your full name, date and place of birth, and all Indiana addresses.
  3. STEP 3Apostille Your Background Check

    • Submit the original background check to the Indiana Secretary of State, Business Services Division, for apostille.
    • The fee is $2 per document. Walk-in requests are accepted at 302 W. Washington Street, Room E-018, Indianapolis, IN 46204, with no appointment required.
    • Walk-in requests can be processed same day. Mail-in requests typically take 3 business days.
    • Contact the office at (317) 234-9768 or INBiz@sos.in.gov for questions.
  4. STEP 4Translate via EcuadorTranslations.com

    • After your document is apostilled, submit it to EcuadorTranslations.com for certified Spanish translation and notarization.
    • Upload a clear scan or photo of your apostilled background check through the EcuadorTranslations.com order form.
    • Cost: $150 per document ($130 each when ordering 3 or more documents). Turnaround: 3 business days.
    • Your translated and notarized document will be delivered digitally, ready for your Ecuador visa application.

Key notes

  • For immigration, the fingerprint-based check through IdentoGO ($21.95) is more thorough than the name-based Limited Criminal History check ($15).
  • Indiana's Secretary of State offers same-day walk-in apostille service with no appointment needed — one of the most convenient in the country.
  • When requesting for immigration purposes, include a written note to ISP specifying the check is for immigration and provide all Indiana addresses.
  • Indiana's combined cost (background check + apostille) is among the lowest at approximately $24 total.
