The passport photo is a small upload, but a rejected image can hold up an otherwise complete Ecuador visa application. The current Ecuador visitor-visa procedure lists these specifications for the eVISAS upload:
- color image;
- JPG format;
- maximum file size of 1 MB;
- 5 × 5 cm, or 2 × 2 inches;
- recent photo;
- white background;
- neutral expression preferred, or a natural smile; and
- both eyes open and visible.
Always check the live checklist for your specific category. A residence visa, tourist visa, and post-approval identity step may use different instructions.
Make the image before opening the application
Create the final file before you begin the portal upload. Use a photo service, pharmacy, shipping store, or a properly lit home setup, then crop and compress the image to the required square dimensions.
The goal is not a beautiful portrait. It is a clear, recent identity image with an even white background and no distracting shadows. Keep your face centered and make sure the top of the head and both sides of the face are visible.
Common avoidable problems
- A rectangular U.S. passport photo uploaded without square cropping;
- a file larger than 1 MB;
- a PNG, HEIC, or PDF instead of a JPG;
- gray, patterned, or outdoor backgrounds;
- sunglasses or anything obscuring the eyes;
- a strong pose, heavy shadow, or face turned away from the camera; and
- a photo reused long after it was taken.
The Ecuador checklist may contain a specific exception for religious head coverings. If one applies to you, follow the official rule rather than relying on a general passport-photo standard.
Keep the file clean
Use a simple filename such as applicant-passport-photo.jpg. Avoid special characters, long filenames, or multiple versions with confusing suffixes. Open the final file before uploading and confirm that it is the correct applicant’s photo.
Do not place the photo inside a PDF unless the portal specifically asks for a PDF. Do not send a screenshot of a photo-booth receipt. Upload the image in the requested format and field.
A photo is not the same as a passport scan
The photo upload and passport upload are separate pieces of evidence. The passport scan should show the biographical page clearly, while the photo is the square identity image requested by the visa application. Check both before submitting.
