Document checklist FAQs

Can I start gathering documents before choosing my visa route?

Yes — your passport, background check, and birth certificate are required for almost every route. However, financial and academic documents are route-specific. We recommend confirming your route before ordering apostilles on financial evidence so you do not authenticate the wrong documents.

What is the correct order: apostille first or translation first?

Apostille first, then translation. The apostille must be attached to the original or certified copy. The translator then works from the apostilled document. Reversing this order creates rework and additional costs.

How long are apostilled documents valid for Ecuador?

This varies by document type and current Cancillería policy. Criminal background checks are typically valid for 90–180 days from issuance. Birth and marriage certificates generally do not expire but must be the certified or newly issued version. Financial evidence usually needs to be recent (within 3–6 months).
